What are you like when you are your very best? You know, those times when everything seems to just be going especially well for you. You feel like you have the magic touch, and everything you do just works out great. My friend and mentor, Kurt Wright calls this state, “Being on a roll.”

Have you ever considered how and why you got there? If you’re like many people, you may never have, and instead you might wait until you’ve fallen off that roll and then wonder what went wrong.

As Kurt points out in his groundbreaking book, Breaking the Rules, if we wait until we’re down and then try to figure out what’s wrong, we are failing to learn the key steps needed to get ourselves back to our natural and desired state of being on a roll.  This is why it’s much more important to discover how and why we get on a roll; so being in that state will become increasingly more frequent and accessible to us. In other words, instead of constantly looking for and asking, “What’s going wrong?” we need to be asking, “What’s going right?”

What a simple and profoundly important shift in our thinking! Why does it work so well? Asking ourselves what’s right questions accesses the intuitive, or right side of our brains, which is the source of all of our creative energy. When we talk of following our heart, our intuition, and our own personal true north, that is all descriptive language for accessing what each of us needs to be truly on a roll–staying connected to our inner source of energy—our intuition.

The very best leaders in the world are true visionaries. Rather than following crowds or fads, they demonstrate a consistent and remarkable openness to new ideas, so they can lift their vision to new levels. Their thought processes generate a surplus of creative energy, which in turn allows them to have a “surplus and abundance world view,” that leaves them open to new ideas. Contrast this way of being with a leader who has a more theory-driven mindset, where they are not open to new ideas unless they don’t threaten their fixed mindset of how things “should” work.

Kurt says the way we can experience wholehearted commitment and become effortless high performers is not by looking outside ourselves for answers, but instead by looking more skillfully inside ourselves—not to our egos and intellects, but to our hearts and intuition—where the only true answers for guiding our lives await our discovery.

How great would it be to experience your whole family being on a roll, both individually and collectively?  Imagine what that might feel like? How would it change your family’s mindset, your relationships and interactions with each other? Why settle for anything less?

Want to get a taste of how being on a roll would change things within your family and in your interactions with friends and business associates?  Just ask everyone you interact with today a “What’s right” question like, “What’s the best thing that happened to you today?” Then sit back and watch how differently they interact with you, how your energy shifts and how much happier and more connected you feel.  You caused that shift!  Now imagine what your entire family could create together if everyone was sharing an abundance mindset!

Future posts will discuss how to remove the obstacles we all have to effortless high performance.  Subscribe to our blog here to receive these automatically.
